on July 27,
1890, at the age of 37, Vincent Van Gogh walked into the fields and shot himself in the chest with a revolver.
Without realizing that he was fatally wounded, he returned to the Ravoux Inn, where he died in his bed two days later.
His brother Theo hastened to be at his side and reported his last words as “La tristesse durera toujours” (French for “(the)
sadness will last forever”).
Vincent was buried at the cemetery of Auvers-sur-Oise.
Events like the life and last words of Vincent Van Gogh
evoke many interesting questions regarding faith and beliefs.
How can one explain how it is that we often hear
of events where bad things happen to good or innocent people?
How does our image and concept of God explain these facts?
I think it’s reasonable to evaluate a religion or one’s beliefs
based upon how they address this reality.
